The people who build community

Prepare pictures of people who teach, grow food, care for shared spaces, support health or transport supplies.

XIMENA’S CORNER · A CLASSROOM IDEA · 2 MIN READ
Storybook illustration of a teacher and a small group reading together in a warm classroom.

Gather pictures of people who teach, grow food, maintain shared spaces, transport goods or support health. Show different people in each occupation without linking a job to a gender. Place simple pretend tools beside the pictures. Before naming occupations, ask what action could be carried out with each object. A notebook, for example, belongs in many kinds of work. That possibility opens a conversation about tasks rather than a search for one correct match between a tool and a particular person.

Turn a classroom corner into a community with a school, a garden and an imaginary care center. Roles can change during play, and nobody needs to represent a family member’s work. Offer a shared mission: deliver a plant to the garden and explain how to care for it. The group will need to prepare the space, arrange transport and communicate instructions. If a problem appears, pause the scene and ask which information or help is missing. Resuming the play lets children test the solution they selected.

Connect maestra / teacher, jardinero / gardener and ayudar / help with actions in the scene. Younger children can choose a pretend tool and show how they would use it. Older children can draw an arrow between two occupations and explain the connection, such as growing food and transporting it. Welcome other suggested jobs without asking for family details. Include care tasks without a uniform or visible title too: preparing a space or accompanying somebody also belongs to the work of shared everyday life.

Draw a map connecting people, places and tasks from the play. Instead of ranking jobs by importance, follow the journey of an everyday object, such as a book arriving in the classroom. Who might have contributed before it was opened? Each child can add an action that supports the shared space, from caring for a material to explaining where it belongs. Keep the map available for new connections. Community becomes a network of different contributions that depend on one another and can be noticed with care.
