A seed and a little patience

Prepare a pot, soil and seeds suitable for an adult-supported planting activity.

XIMENA’S CORNER · A CLASSROOM IDEA · 2 MIN READ
Illustration of a teacher and children caring for plants in a garden.

Prepare a pot with drainage, a tray, soil and seeds suitable for an adult-supported planting activity. Read their growing instructions and choose a place with the light they need. Show a grown plant beside a seed and invite observations about their differences. Children can draw what they imagine might be inside the seed before planting. Explain that these materials are for growing, not tasting, and include handwashing in the routine. Keep the seed packet beside the pot for future questions.

Fill the pot and sow at the depth recommended for the chosen species. One child can hold the label while another helps water, avoiding a flooded tray. Record the starting date and draw the surface exactly as it looks today. Over the following days, include observations that nothing new is visible. Waiting belongs in the record too: changes may happen below the soil before a shoot appears. A simple dated drawing makes that quiet interval visible without inventing progress to fill the page.

Connect semilla / seed, raíz / root and crecer / grow with a sequence of drawings, keeping those illustrations distinct from the actual plant. Younger children can point to a new leaf; older children can add dates and compare height using paper strips. Store each strip beside its drawing to preserve earlier measurements. Avoid digging up the seed to check it. Ask what the group knows from looking at this pot and what it imagines from other plants encountered in the classroom or outdoors.

After several days, open the notebook and compare its first drawing with the latest one. Review where the pot stood and when it received water. If no shoot appeared, check the seed’s growing requirements before choosing a change for another attempt. The aim is to connect care with observation rather than produce a plant identical to a model. When the time is right, choose a place where the plant can keep growing and make a label telling the story of its beginnings and the questions it inspired.
